Early in Edward Ballo’s professional career he was trained in the use of continuous improvement techniques. He was trained and certified in Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve and Control (DMAIC) model when earning his Six Sigma Greenbelt. He then used his training to eliminate EHS risks, address behaviors and improve performance.
It was during this time in Edward’s career that he focused on greater challenges, so he decided to get trained and certified as a DMAIC Six Sigma Black Belt. Edward used continuous improvement to address optimization of an on-site medical clinic, hand lacerations, optimization of plating bath dumps which impacted waste water treatment operations, improper lifting and postures in the workplace as well as focus on key improvements with a Title V permit.
Edward was the first person in the EHS function, worldwide, to become a Certified Six Sigma Black Belt for the corporation which he was working for at the time. His Black Belt project focused on the reduction of wastewater discharged from a wet processes center of excellence to a wastewater treatment plant, the identified cost reducers included: chemical usage, rework, scrap, safety and implementation of a preventive maintenance process.
After completion of this Black Belt project Edward achieved a total year over year cost savings of $400,000.
