Edward Ballo has consistently used risk assessments throughout his career in EHS. He first started using a failure mode and effect analysis (FMEA) as a risk identification tool. He then progressed to using a more sophisticated and integrated tool that specifically fleshed out all aspects of the site being evaluated.
After the prioritization was completed, an analysis of the findings was generated. Based on the findings, a project plan was created to significantly reduce or eliminate the risk. Many times the findings required additional funding and schedule to complete. When it was identified as a strategic risk, future capital and expense money had to be allocated for the improvements necessary to reduce or eliminate the risk. In all cases, proper communication with key stakeholders was required. A complete review of site risks was required, at least every other year, to ensure compliance and that the risks were being addressed properly.
